Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy continue to team with classroom staff in a program called Explore and Learn. Explore and Learn is based on a team approach to integrate motor skill
and cognitive skill development with communication and socialization
development. We believe children learn through movement and meaningful
play. Each session consists of an opening routine, stations, and a closing routine. During the opening routine, students work on appropriate greetings and
recognizing themselves through pictures or written word (first name,
last name, or address). Students rotate to a different station each time they attend Explore and Learn. The three stations are: gross motor, fine motor, and sensory exploration. Themes are rotated throughout the year, and activities are planned in relation to the theme at each station. The closing routine gives students a chance to work on relaxation through use of lighting and quiet music. Elementary and Middle School students participate in this program one time per week throughout the school year.
Therapists work with students in and out of the classroom on many areas related to IEP goals and objectives including: feeding skills, self-care skills, fine motor skills, pre-work and work skills, play and leisure skills, and gross motor skills. Therapists consult with classroom staff in many areas including: positioning, equipment, adaptation of materials, and sensorimotor activities incorporated into the classroom setting.
